Muistiinpanoja The Thingistä
15.03.06 17:03
Kävin The UK Web & Mini Comix Thingissä Lontoossa lauantaina 11.3. opintomatkalla.
Spreading the Word: Distribution and Promotion of Webcomics and the Small Press -paneeli
Osallistujat: Barry Renshaw (vetäjä), Daniel Merlin Goodbrey (1), Jonti Picking (2), Colin Dinnie (3), Gianna Masetti (4), Shane Chebsey (5)
2: get one thing popular and it will spread 4: word of mouth 4: immediate talkback - you know what the readers think, though there is a certain persentage of idiots always involved it is also good 1: comics for iPod (clickwheel.net), a comic art exhibition in a museum in a game (Second Life) 1: digital paper - change in digital comics coming?! All: selling stuff on websites to accommodate site costs 5: promo CD - there are so many CDs given out nowadays that they're not interesting, plus people are used to getting them for free so they're not willing to pay for them - not marketable 5/All: promoting by social contact is a good way of getting new readers, because everyone doesn't have the internet 4: downloadable comics (for PSP) 4: webcomics are easy - for most the printing stuff flies over the head, it's too difficult for a beginner 4: if your comic takes a few pages to get into before you realize it's good, a lot of users turn away because they don't bother to read that long - trailers, prologue? If your art is so-so in the beginning, do it again or do a prologue Audience: is it that bad to lose readers due to short attention span? 5: find out what makes YOU attracted to a comic, so you can use that to attract people to your comic Audience: re-drawn first pages - a book with re-drawn content plus a CD with the original drawings on the side (panel people: only attractive to fans to see the old art, so only fan merchandise?) All(?): would be nice to have indie comics available also outside comic shops: bookstores etc. 4: advertising a webcomic: * comic lists (good for a new site where you don't know how many readers there are) - voting on those lists * forums * ads outside the webcomic circle of people (new potential readers, you can for example give ad cards to movie goers if your comic might attract them) * put your artwork to big sites (for example fan art to a big game's official site, will get you a few hits) 5: * bring readers in from outside the web, don't just advertise to web people 1: * stunts All: mobile content is wanted (be careful on the rights) All: subscribtions: they mostly send people away, they don't really work, there are too many comics available for free Audience: websnark - writes about webcomics (a web mag?) Audience: a new way to subscribe, not seen often: archives are free but new stuff costs Audience/1: micropayments (1 pence/page), eg. Bitpass 2?: noted that they don't really work that well either 2: works best on separate platforms (consoles, mobiles etc.)
Critical Mass: Debate and Criticism of and in the Small Press -paneeli
* How do you feel about reviewing in the web? Good/bad/too varied/useful/not? * fans tend to bitch about a negative review in forums * bad review = slump, good review = pride - is it good to have so much feedback? * people say things in the web that they wouldn't say to their face (do you?) * reviews on blogs and comments on those reviews = good or bad? * there are a lot of reviews on comics in podcasts
Pencil & rubber, reviews in comic form (can be found somewhere in the web)
Muita muistiinpanoja
Shane vinkkasi mulle pari lisää kirjoja luettavaksi: Tools & Techniques of Digital Cartooning (edit. John Barber) ja History of Webcomics (edit.? T. Cambell). Jälkimmäisestä on Aleksin mukaan joku huono arvostelu PVPOnlinessa (Scott Kurtzin kirjoittamana).
Weebl & Bob - animaatiota sarjakuvan ohella, kahdenlaista sisältöä joka houkuttelee ihmisiä molemmista harrastajakunnista (animaation fanit tulevat animaation kautta, sarjakuvan fanit sarjakuvan kautta)
